About

A mouthy medieval nun, banished to an outpost convent in Vinland, leads a rebellious sisterhood in an audacious plot to bust out of the nunnery and stick it to the misogynistic Bishop. An absurd Pythonesque comedy series, based on a true story… that we have transubstantiated to suit our nefarious needs.

Our Origin story

We fell in love with Johanna of Leeds the first time we heard the true story of her escape from Clementhorpe Priory in England. We both saw past the tabloid headline nature of her fake death to the woman beneath – smart, ambitious and no doubt having a laugh at the expense of the domineering bishop. Johanna was a scrapper willing to take huge risks to be free to live life her way, never staying in her lane, and never making choices based on fear. Elbows always up.

She was clearly sitcom material. So we wrote a half-hour pilot script. It won the BAFTA Rocliffe Comedy Writing award, and was performed in a showcase reading starring Charlotte Riley, Angus Imrie and Jessica Gunning. Stories about fucking with the patriarchy transcend boundaries, and we wanted to tell Johanna’s story in our home country. So we created an alternate history in which the Church had an outpost convent for problem nuns in Vinland, aka darkest Canada in 1318. With support from the Independent Production Fund, Johanna made the jump across the pond, and we got to tell her story our way, the Canadian way.
